Eco-Conscious Kicks off Portland Fashion Week
Portland Fashion Week started last night with an insight into the future of eco-conscious designs with an installation of Artisan designers. Portland being as eco-conscious as possible, it was interesting to see fashion’s take on staying green and reusing the plants resources. Along with displaying local clothing designers and artists, PFW featured The Human Pollination Project by Laura Allcorn and Junk to Funk a “Trashion Collective” line.
With the epidemic of Honeybee’s disappearing and not pollinating our crops, designer Laura Allcorn developed a sterling silver hand tool kit to serve as the purpose of the bee’s but by man. Allcorn’s intricate design brings fashion and sustainability into the palm of your hands by allowing the user to gain access to the pollen and making it accessible to the resources that need it, especially our crops.
A definite win for the eco-conscious night was Junk to Funk’s display of reusing old fabrics, hats, leathers and more and creating a story of fashion designs. The dress shirt outfit was inspired by Spanish armor and origami; the designer took old men’s dress shirts and turned them into a couture gown. Another great dress that was created with ball caps and jerseys named of course the ‘take me out to the ball gown’ was a major hit with the ladies dates of the night. One male onlooker said “honey I would love to see you wear that”, which made us laugh. Bring sports into fashion and bam men are into it.
Wednesday’s events were just the beginning of what is supposed to be an elite display of fashion and designers. Tonight’s events include a showdown of emerging designer’s competition runway show featuring Anar Couture, Ms Wood, Nelli Millard and Devonation. We hold no bias toward any of the designers but have had the chance to see Devon Yan Berrongs ‘Devonation’ collection first hand and we know it is a work of art. Berrong also featured some of his ‘Devonation’ collection recently at Candy and was received with an enormous applause by onlookers. Saving the best for last of course we are looking forward to seeing his PFW collection on the runway and competing with other great emerging designers.
If there is any place to be tonight in the Portland fashion industry it’s at the Vigor docks. Come out and enjoy the fabulous clothes for spring and summer and if you see a girl with platinum hair and tattoo’s say hi, I would love to meet our readers!
